Botox and Fillers Q & A
What are Botox and fillers?
Botox and fillers are injectable treatments for aging skin. These minimally invasive treatments reduce the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles, and deep facial creases. Botox is a neuromodulator — it temporarily paralyzes the muscles it’s injected into. The result is that the skin sitting atop these muscles softens and relaxes.
Dermal fillers inject gel-like substances like hyaluronic acid into your skin. They can fill in creases and restore areas of lost volume. Dr. Humeniuk offers several brands of fillers, including Restylane®, Radiesse®, and Juvéderm®.
What can Botox and fillers treat?
As a neuromodulator, Botox specifically targets the wrinkles that are caused by muscle movement. They’re called dynamic wrinkles. The best types of lines and wrinkles to treat with Botox include:
- Superficial forehead wrinkles
- Low eyebrows
- Glabellar lines (between the eyebrows)
- Bunny lines (around the nose)
- Hidradenitis (severe underarm sweating)
- Superficial nasolabial folds (around the nose and mouth)
What makes Botox unique is that it prevents new wrinkles from forming. By temporarily paralyzing the muscles underneath your skin, the skin can’t crease to create new wrinkles.
Dermal fillers plump up the sagging skin caused by volume loss. These are called static wrinkles. Compared with Botox, fillers are better for treating deep wrinkles and creases. Common circumstances in which fillers are the better choice include:
- Lip enhancement
- Brow shaping and lifting
- Bunny lines
- Cheek enhancement
- Superficial nasolabial folds
- Top lip lines
If you’re considering Botox or fillers to minimize wrinkles and sagging skin, schedule a consultation with Dr. Humeniuk to find out which treatment best suits your needs.
What can I expect from treatment with Botox and fillers?
Botox requires little to no preparation, and you receive a dental block before receiving fillers injections. Dr. Humeniuk applies a topical anesthetic before the injections, so the treatment shouldn’t feel painful. After each injection, he massages the area to ensure even distribution.
Fillers provide instant results that you can see right away. Depending on the type of filler you choose, your results can last between three months and two years. To maintain your results, see Dr. Humeniuk for touch-ups.
You’ll likely notice improvements in the tone and texture of your skin within a few days of your first Botox injection. However, it usually takes about two weeks to see visible results. The effects of Botox gradually begin to fade after 3-6 months, but touch-up injections help you maintain your results.
